Regulation for the assignment of the supervisor for the degree thesis
The degree examination consists of the discussion of a thesis prepared by the student during the final year of the course of study, under the supervision of a lecturer (full or associate professor, researcher or equivalent), whose teaching discipline must be included in the current Study Plan (Master's/Specialist) or in that of the three-year course. The effort required must be commensurate with the number of university credits (CFU) awarded.
All students are required to submit a request for the assignment of a supervisor. The request may be made by students who have obtained at least:
- 78 CFU for the Master's Degree (students enrolled with code “M62”, study plans starting from the 2018/19 academic year)
- 81 CFU for the Master's Degree (students enrolled with registration number “M62”, study plans up to the 2017/18 academic year)
- 87 credits for the Specialist Degree (students with registration number 349)
They may request the assignment of a supervisor in one of the following periods:
- from 15 to 31 January
- from 15 to 31 March
- from 15 to 30 June
- from 15 to 30 September
- from 15 to 30 November
The request must indicate, in order of preference, four lecturers belonging to at least two different subject areas. Only in certain cases, such as students who have been awarded an Erasmus+ Thesis or Erasmus Traineeship grant, is it permitted to indicate only one supervisor.
Requests will not be considered if they:
- are received outside the periods indicated above
- do not include the names of four teachers
- do not comply with the requirement for teachers from different subject areas
Based on the requests received, a merit ranking will be drawn up, according to which the supervisor will be assigned, taking into account the preferences indicated and the availability of the teachers
The result of the assignment will be published at the following link Once the assignment has been made, the student may not submit another assignment request for a period of one year. If none of the teachers indicated can be assigned, the student will be asked to identify another teacher. In the event of non-assignment, the student is allowed to reapply for assignment in a subsequent round without waiting for a year to pass.
Each student must submit their application by filling in the appropriate online form via Microsoft Forms, accessible via the following link
An institutional account (an email address such as This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) is required to access the form.
The form consists of six sections:
- student personal details
- personal details relating to the bachelor's degree
- personal details relating to the master's degree
- progress of the master's degree
- choice of supervisor
- confirmation and submission
In particular, in section 4 “Master's degree progress” you are required to upload a certificate of your progress (certificate/self-certification of enrollment with exams and study plan, with grades and dates), which can be downloaded from Segrepass. Students are strongly advised to follow the instructions in the form regarding the name and type of file. If the academic status shown on Segrepass is not up to date (for example, because some exams, especially in the case of Erasmus, have not yet been uploaded to the academic record at the time of submission of the request), it is possible to supplement the certificate by filling in the appropriate fields.
In section 5 “Choice of Supervisor” students must indicate, in order of preference, the names of four professors belonging to at least two different subject areas. The list of available professors, with their respective subject areas (or “fields”) and an indication of their “availability,” is provided in an .xls file, which can be accessed via the link provided in the form. This list is updated at the end of each assignment cycle.
If a teacher chosen by the student is not included in the list, the student can enter the name in the form.
Once the request has been sent, the student will receive confirmation via their institutional email address. Please pay close attention to the information you enter in the form to avoid having to submit a new request (due to having entered incorrect information in the previous one!).
The ranking will be drawn up by assigning a score according to the same methodology used to determine the base grade for the degree (excluding grades with honors).
Each student will then be assigned a “priority coefficient” calculated as follows:
Priority coefficient = M · 11/3 + T(S,M)
where
M = weighted average of exams (weighted according to ECTS credits) passed at the date of application
TM = Degree grade rate (max 3) calculated as (bachelor's degree grade – 99) / 4 (for the Master's degree)
TS = Degree grade rate (max 4) calculated as (three-year degree grade – 99) / 3 (for the specialist degree)
